Everyday when I get on my laptop I click on internet explore and it takes me to my home page, yahoo. I like to look at some of the stories that seem interesting. I saw one the other day about a McDonald's burger and fries that someone bought and let sit out on their counter for 6 months. She took weekly pictures of the burger, and on day 180 the burger and fries looked the exact same as the day she bought it. The only thing that happened to the McDonald's meal was that it became hard, there was not mold, a bad smell, or decomposition. After I saw this I started to Google to see if anyone else had ever tried this and I found that someone other people had done this same experiment. One person has had a McDonald's burger for 12 years now and they also have one that is almost 2 years old. Picture and story here. Both of these burgers look identical and look the same as a burger that was bought 10 minutes ago. They also said that the only change in the burger was that it had became hard. This is pretty messed up, if you left a normal loaf of bread out it would start to mold, harden, and probably start to smell. Home made bread molds a lot faster than a loaf of bread from a store. So what are they putting in these burgers to make them so invincible? There has to be a lot of chemicals put into the bun and the meat that makes them not mold and start to smell. The other stories that I read about people leaving food out for a long period of time had similar results with different food. One person said that a subway sandwich did the same as the burger and after weeks it never molded or started to smell. There was also the same story with someone leaving out a twinkie for a year. So what are these food companies putting in our food that make them never mold? Is it safe?

McDonald's burgers are invincible.

Dear Fast Food Inflation,
ReplyDeleteThe notion that food can last without ever molding for years is absurd when millions of those meals are sold every day. Decomposition is a natural process marking the end of "live" systems and the fact that food doesn't go through this decomposition is scary. I try very hard to steer away from fast food and your post is yet another example of why I avoid it due to the fact that "burgers {can} look identical and look the same as a burger that was bought 10 minutes ago" is just astonishing. On the question of whether or not the food is safe seems to be answerable in that millions of people are diagnosed with diseases such as Diabetes that were in rare occurrence before America became such a fat nation. Thanks for the clear and well made point on the fact that fast food doesn't spoil and keep it up!
Sincerely,
Bunting

Dear Chase,
ReplyDeleteAll I can think is gross! How many times have I run through McDonald's needing to pick up something fast to eat? I try not to think about what chemicals I am putting in my mouth included in the processed product.
I definately agree that it is disturbing to think that "on day 180 the burger and fries looked the exact same as the day she bought it." food is not suppose to be indestructible. I cannot believe I digest these products!
I also question what makes these products so resilient. What are people eating daily that can stand up to the test of time?
Thank you for writing this bit of information. I will defintately be thinking the next time i am tempted to quickly run through McDonald's. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely, Sebastian
Dear Chase P.,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bunting and Sebastian on there thoughts of how disgusting this is. Food is supposed to decompose like any other natural substance. It makes you wonder what fast food places are actually putting in their food to make this burger invinciable. I have never really cared for Mcdonalds and this post only strengthens my dislike for this fast food company. Thank you for your blog and I look forward to reading your other ones.
